Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County keep kids safe after school by providing a positive environment where they can learn, play, and grow. Club membership focuses on Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character & Leadership.
Our Club members take part in high-impact learning opportunities that are fun and educational. They find a world of age-appropriate resources and experiences all in a safe place to explore interests, make positive social relationships, and gain confidence. Our staff helps them to become confident and strong students who will graduate from high school on time with a realistic and ambitious plan for success.
To help our Club members achieve Academic Success, our stand-alone Clubs offer fun, project-based academic activities, STEM programming, robotics, financial literacy, homework help, tutoring, college & career prep. and summer enrichment. In 2018, with support from the School District, we received a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant through the Florida Department of Education, allowing us to revamp our academic program offerings in a joint effort to close the student achieving gap. Accordingly, our Clubs are implementing a suite of evidence-based programs that are aligned with State Academic Standards in core subjects – Math, English/Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. Certified teachers are facilitating these programs and providing Club members with one-on-one support. Critically, these teachers work at the schools attended by our Club members and connect in-school and after-school learning for students by ensuring that academic programs align with the school curriculum – ultimately providing an additional layer of support to struggling students.
Healthy Lifestyles programs in our Clubs include physical fitness, wellness/nutrition, organic gardening, and drug/alcohol prevention programs. In addition, to better meet the mental and behavioral health needs of Club members, we are partnering with mental health service providers to expand our frontline staff’s ability to recognize signs of trauma through expanded learning opportunities that include Trauma Informed Care and Implicit Bias Training.
Our Character and Leadership programs help youth become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills to participate in the democratic process. Program participants also develop leadership skills and gain opportunities for planning, decision-making, contributing to Club and community and celebrating our national heritage.
Club programs in the areas of Good Character & Citizenship include case management and mentoring programs designed to help youth accomplish college, career and personal goals; leadership & community service opportunities; and Youth of the Year. In 2018, we received a transformational AmeriCorps grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). This grant has enabled us to deploy 25 AmeriCorps Members into the county’s 5 middle schools to deliver mentoring and intervention services to students. During the 2019-20 school year, this program was expanded to serve students in grades K-5 by delivering targeted literacy intervention at 5 elementary schools.
