The food truck program at Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County, called "Fork in the Road," was launched in 2021 as a central component of their workforce development and career readiness initiatives. The program spans nine weeks and serves as a cornerstone for the Culinary Training and Certification Programs offered by the organization. The intensive training equips participating teenagers with crucial skills for the culinary industry, encompassing sanitation practices, knife handling, food safety, and cooking techniques. Graduates of the program are well-prepared to enter the high-demand culinary workforce.
For those students with a desire to delve deeper into the culinary world, the program offers a multi-level approach. Progressing to levels two and three involves both the food truck and a modern Club kitchen. Here, students expand their knowledge to cover areas like menu creation, budget management, supply chain logistics, and even overseeing the Club's meal program. The program's success is evident, having trained over 45 Club teens and still growing. These graduates have completed the program and passed a certification exam, earning them a ServSafe food handler certification. This qualification enables them to pursue opportunities in various commercial kitchens, showcasing the program's impact on their skill development and future career prospects.
